In the bustling kitchens of Des Moines Public Schools (DMPS), School Breakfast Week takes on a special flavor each year as the district’s dedicated team of culinary professionals puts a spotlight on school breakfast.

This year’s theme was Surf’s Up with School Breakfast. The Iowa Egg Council collaborated with DMPS to provide items intended to generate excitement, not only for School Breakfast Week, but for new egg options added to the menu.

Partnering with the Iowa Egg Council, the DMPS cafeterias added surfboard photo props branded with nutrition messaging. Iowa Egg Council also provided elementary-age posters with messaging such as: “Incorporating eggs provides a nutritious boost to start their day with essential nutrients like vitamin D, choline, and omega-3 fatty acids as well as 6 grams of protein!” Classrooms were provided with coloring sheets featuring egg nutrition facts and Iowa Egg Council’s mascot, Stem Shelly, visited elementary schools to interact with students and offer photo opportunities.

By promoting the consumption of nutritious foods like eggs, DMPS is laying the foundation for healthier eating habits that can last a lifetime. Whether scrambled, boiled, or poached, eggs serve as a delicious and versatile symbol of the district’s commitment to nourishing students and fostering a culture of wellness.
