The five largest egg producing states represent approximately 54 percent of all U.S. layers.
  • U.S. egg production during December 2025 was 7.86 billion table eggs.
  • In May 2026, approximately 48% of the U.S. laying hen flock was cage free.
  • According to the U.S. Census of Agriculture, in 2021, there were 627 egg producing operations with flocks of 50,000 hens or more. In 1997, there were 977 operations with flocks of 50,000 hens or more.
  • In 2025, the average number of egg-type laying hens in the U.S. was 300 million. Flock size for January 1, 2026, was 311 million layers, increasing from 209 million on January 1, 2025. Rate of lay per day in January 2026, averaged 81.9 eggs per 100 layers, up from 80.8 in 2025.
